About me
John Farris is the K-12 Social Studies Consultant for the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency (Wayne RESA). John joined Wayne RESA after three years as a Social Studies Training and Support Coordinator for the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Before DPSCD, John was an Education Specialist at the Zekelman Holocaust Center (HC) in Farmington Hills, where he supported Michigan teachers with curriculum and training in Holocaust education. Prior to the HC, he spent ten years teaching Social Studies in grades 7-12 at St. Benedict High School in Chicago and University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. John is a 2015 United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Teacher Fellow. He participated in the Olga Lengyel Institute's (TOLI) first-ever bi-national Holocaust education seminar in Innsbruck, Austria in 2016 and has co-directed TOLI's Michigan Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education since 2013. John was an education consultant to the Michigan Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education, charged with providing guidance and resources for implementation of Public Act 170, the 2016 law mandating genocide education for all grade 8-12 public school students in the state of Michigan. A career switcher, John spent ten years as an advertising art director and creative director. John has a BS in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MA in the Teaching of History from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
