About me
Scott Koenig serves as a Social Studies Consultant for the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). His work focuses on guiding educators with their efforts implementing Michigan’s social studies content expectations. Scott’s work includes supporting the creation of inclusive learning spaces for Michigan's social studies students. A primary solution for creating inclusion and building empathy is found in our content expectations. He is challenging Michigan’s social studies community to shift our practices to center inquiry. Inquiry is at the heart of social studies. It allows the creation of safe spaces for questioning and problem solving, studying various perspectives, learning to use and evaluate sources and evidence, and communicating possible conclusions. So that students can be prepared to confidently participate in our modern world. Additionally, he is working on growing the current statewide network of social studies educators who are reimagining what the social studies learning experience can be. Scott advocates for social studies education to be the lead discipline for schools to integrate all its learning through. As this learning is the foundation for our students to be prepared global citizens.
Short Version: “Just a blue-collar practitioner who is trying to make this world a better place through social studies learning.”
