About me
Latinos have rich and enduring ties to Southwest Detroit. Beckoned by industry, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans arrived in the city at the turn of the 20th century and planted roots—their destinies shaped by shifting policies, promises of work, and social mobility. What ensued was the formation of a distinct community that forever transformed Michigan's culture. Voces: The Southwest Detroit Oral History Project is a journalistic endeavor documenting the city’s history from the perspective of its Mexican and Puerto Rican communities. The project will cover historical events from the early 1900s to the present, exploring topics like the city’s era of manufacturing and innovation, the Jones Act of 1917, the Bracero Program, Mexican Repatriation of the 1930s, the founding of Mexicantown, and the 1967 Detroit Rebellion, and the founding of the Chicano-Boricua Studies Department at Wayne State University, among others.
